Learn Ealing continues to deliver courses through its online offer. We will deliver lessons and support learners through the use of Google Education suite, Zoom, Skype and other digital platforms. 

Our 2021-2022 Prospectus is now available, however there will be major changes to the way we can provide these courses in the Autumn Term.  

To participate in online classes you will need an email address, a reliable internet connection, a computer/laptop/tablet/mobile phone with fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome).  Your device will need a microphone and preferably a camera.

Description

The weather changes so frequently in Autumn, often we don't know whether to wear a winter coat or a jacket. So lets not get caught off guard this year and instead wear a sweatshirt-with a lining. To keep you cosy on those nippy days!  

Aims of the course
The weather changes frequently in Autumn that we sometimes are confused on whether to wear a winter coat or a jacket, so let us not get caught off guard this year and wear a Sweatshirt instead. There is the option to line your garment for added warmth on those nippy days. Please see page 2 for Materials and equipment.

What you will learn on this course
- How to choose your size - How to Sew 2 way stretch - How to use ribbing on necklines, cuffs, and Hems - How to line a Hooded sweatshirt

Suitability and entry requirements
You will need to have: - A reasonable level of spoken English to follow the class - A domestic sewing machine. - A camera device whether it be a laptop, tablet or Smartphone which will allow you to use Google Meets to participate in the online sessions. - Access to YouTube for tutorial videos If in doubt, discuss your needs with Ealing Adult Learning.

How you will learn on the course
- Whole group teaching through demonstrations - Individual practice through tutorial videos - 1:1 help and guidance through email or video call

Assessment method
This is a non-accredited course. A certificate of attendance is available at the end of term if you have attended 100% of the course. Assessment will be largely based on tutor observation, emailed pictures of completed tasks and self-reflection. Your Individual Learning Plan will also assist with monitoring your progress.

How much additional time do you need?
There will be no formal homework, but you may choose to practise what you have learnt in class at home. Your tutor will give you tips on how to safely practise using your sewing machine outside the classroom environment.

You will need: Kwik Sew Pattern K3045 https://jaycotts.co.uk/products/k3045?variant=378934771 - A sewing machine - 2 metre for style A or 3 metre for style B - Main Fabric choices must be of 2 way or 4 way stretch such as Sweatshirt, medium weight knitted Jersey, Scuba, Fleece, Ponte Roma, Cable Knit, etc. - Cuff / Hem Fabric for style A – Rib Knit ¼ metre or elastic 2m (1 ½ or 2 inch wide) - Lining Optional – light weight knit of 2 way or 4 way stretch. 2 metre for style A or 3 metre for style B - Drawstring Optional 2 metres - 1 sewing thread to match (preferably Coats Moon) - Stretch needle - 1 bobbin or bobbin and case depending on your machine bobbing loading system - Small scissors or snips - Fabric Scissors or rotary cutter and cutting mat - Unpicker/ seam ripper - Dressmakers’ pins - Measuring tape - Note pad and pen - Pattern Paper (wrapping or packaging paper can be used as an alternative) - Masking Tape

Your Tutor
SASHA CABEY is a fully trained and qualified Tailor who has taught the art of tailoring since 2012. She has worked in Newham College and London College of contemporary Art and is currently working at Buckinghamshire New University. She has worked on Savile Row, created unique looks for fashion and runway productions, setup and run her own training facility as well as created garments for numerous fashion shows throughout the UK and Caribbean. She has taught a range of subjects over the years including but not limited to Bespoke Tailoring, Pattern Cutting and Garment Construction. She is passionate about her role and finds great joy in passing on her skill set to anyone who is willing to learn. Her true passion is sewing and can be found sewing anything from upholstery, clothing, lingerie, and accessories. She enjoys the challenge of testing commercial patterns and trying new sewing techniques and gadgets.
