This course is designed to support speakers of other languages to develop their English language skills in speaking, listening and communication. It focuses on language used in everyday situations and will help you to understand and use English related to work, further study, access to public services, as well as in general day to day communication.
Overview
This introductory course is designed for individuals who either want to enrol in a full Entry 3 Functional Skills English program or simply want to refresh their basic English skills. This course will enable you to develop a foundation in essential skills, communicate effectively in a variety of contexts or to prepare for further education where a Functional Skills qualification is required to progress.
Aim
This stand-alone course will enable learners to develop confidence and fluency in, and a positive attitude towards, English. Learners should be able to demonstrate their competence in English by using it in real-world situations as well as demonstrating a sound grasp of basic English knowledge and skills.
Throughout the course, learners will rebuild their skills or to prepare for the longer programme. The course will cover:
- Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
- Language Features
- Different sentence structures
Learning Outcomes
Listen, understand, and respond to verbal communicating in a range of familiar contexts
Acquire an understanding of everyday words and their uses and effects, and apply this understanding in different contexts
Read with accuracy straightforward texts encountered in everyday life and work and develop confidence to read more widely
Write straightforward texts and documents with clarity and effectiveness, and demonstrate a sound grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

How you will learn in this course/workshop
We offer a free assessment tool to help your progress and to guide you to the appropriate level. The course will run for 14 weeks, and a class tutor will help you set your goals to develop your English skills.
Accreditation, qualifications and assessment methods
You will be completing formative and summative assessments within the programme. You will not sit an examination at the end of the course.
Independent study required?
Your class tutor will assign tasks to help you gain confidence in everyday reading, writing, and speaking.
